JUDGE ANDERSON

"Psi-Division! Zip it, creep!"

Following the success of the Judge Dredd: Year One series (written variously by Michael Carroll, Matt Smith and Al Ewing), which essayed Dredd’s first year on the streets of Mega-City One, I pitched the idea of giving psychic law-enforcer Judge Anderson the same treatment.

I was keen to give Anderson the chance to stand on her own and really showcase the strength of her personality, her distinctive optimism and sense of humour, which makes her such a perfect foil to Dredd’s dourness in the comics.

One of my all-time favourite characters from the 2000 AD pantheon, Judge Anderson was both a dream and a nightmare to write. As a character, she’s among the richest in the Dreddverse. Her telepathic gift grants her a uniquely compassionate perspective on the city she is charged with protecting, and on the brutality of the Justice Department she has committed to serve. Writing her adventures in fiction allows far greater scope to explore her pathology than a weekly/monthly comic strip would allow, offering the chance to show how she processes the terrible world around her, the effect that has on her, and just how heroic and resilient she must be just to stay alive and sane. All that’s great, but as a psychic who can hear every secret lurking in the heads of all the other characters, she also has the potential to destroy every scene she walks into, which made plotting her adventures especially tricky.

I wrote a trilogy of novellas about the young Judge Anderson, which first appeared in the form of digital-only novellas. These are currently due to be collected in June 2017 for an omnibus print edition.
